Artist Statement: An Invitation
Throughout my childhood, my mother would stucco all the ceilings and walls in our houses. Fully captivated, I would sit for hours while she used a mayonnaise jar lid to decorate every exposed surface.
I was always impressed by my mothers spontaneity and creative use of plaster, but equally indelible, was her continued inaction that forced me into foster-care at age 14. She contributed a strand of inadequacy to my existence which has frequently found a way to create a space of resistance and flux. It also has served as a dwelling place for my tenacity and desire to find surfaces to decorate and paint. This unusual space has ultimately become just as sacred as some of the most famous cathedrals around the globe.
A cathedral is a container for spiritual expressions that symbolize a part of history that people visit weekly or even daily, to observe, reflect and pray. The impulse to create pinches my delicate pale skin and outlines a conviction to accept the inclination to create expressions that can become a catalyst for change, as I recollect memories and create reliquaries.
Each canvas is filled with "fragments" of my life, it is all autobiographical and held sacred. Hints of realism connect with abstraction as mini-portraits to commemorate the memories that bind me to the past, present and future.
My recent work is an expression of several intangible moments as they simultaneously collide with the desire to accept the things I cannot change. The ironic twist within this process is that I discovered that I was trying to capture the pure potential of every moment I have ever known. I couldn’t investigate these expressions without acknowledging the layers of my life that began by both observing my mothers creativity and witnessing her reluctance to be a mother. This process pushes me to sit for hours and paint the walls of a cathedral that has never been seen before.
Therefore, I invite you to observe, reflect and pray.
